Motorhome is a noun with only one meaning: a motorized vehicle used for camping or other recreational activities. However motorhomes have 3 classifications – Class A, B and C. Class B, the smallest of the three, consists of camping van conversions. Class C is the mid-sized motorhome and is built on a cutaway van chassis. Class A is the largest and most luxurious. They are built on a stripped-rail chassis.

Class A motorhomes are the most often the biggest and most expensive. Their cockpits are the roomiest and offer the best viewing from the front as they have the largest windshields and the highest seats. They have either gas and diesel engines. Manufacturers are moving the engine around – from the traditional gas engine mounting between the front seats (“doghouse”) to the “diesel pusher” a rear mounted diesel engine. There are now mid-engine and front-end diesel engines as well as the recently announced UFO chassis introduced by Workhouse. The UFO stands for universal fuel option as well as universal floor option. This means that you can choose your fuel (gas or diesel). These innovations open up a variety of floorplans unavailable before.

- Class C motorhomes

Class C motorhomes offer the most flexibility and perhaps the most familiarity. Their cockpit is certainly more familiar to most drivers as it is essentially a van-type cockpit. The drive is familiar and easily doubles as family transportation. Class C’s are equipped with sleeping quarters and a small kitchen as well as most needed amenities. You can equip them with an optional portable toilet and/or a small shower. They come in a variety of lengths, equipment levels and sleeping arrangements. The over-head bunks are especially appealing to kids. These motorhomes are traditionally gas powered, but diesel platforms are gaining popularity.
- Class B Motorhomes
-
Class B motorhomes are reminiscent of the 60’s hippie vans. Whether you are going cross-country or just cross-town, you take all of the comforts of your home on the road. These vehicles provide the fuel economy, driving and parking ease of a van or an SUV. The different models available offer seating up to 7 people and sleep up to 4 people as well as toilet and shower facilities.
