Did you know there are 3,679,182 square miles to see in America? In those square miles there are over 16,000 campgrounds, both public and private, 367 national parks that offer over 400 campgrounds with 29,000 campsites and our 156 national forests offer more than 4,000 campgrounds. Additionally, upscale parks continue to pop up right across North America with resorts found in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The open road has never been a more viable option.
There are great weekend and extended trip getaways all over the country. Whether you start out from home in your RV or travel to a destination to rent one you have many options. In the fall if you’re on the East coast you can take advantage of less crowded campgrounds and less congested roads and head out to leaf peep. The local news always has a segment on where the leaves are putting on their fall best. You can leaf peep on the West Coast as well. Check out the Rocky Mountains, Oregon or Washington for their changing fall foliage.
From any coast or anywhere within the country, the early fall season can be a beautiful time to head to a beach. The Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, the Gulf, the Great Lakes or any of the interior lakes and, of course the many rivers offer a simply fabulous vacation spot. The summer crowds have dissipated but the weather can still hold the summer warmth. The water temperatures have not yet dropped (but rental as well as some shopping prices may have). It’s a wonderful time to explore at your leisure.
An RV expedition can take you as far as you want to go. You can venture back into medieval times by traveling to any number of the Renaissance fairs that pop up all over the country. There are also re-enactments of historical events, like the Civil War or Revolutionary War. If you wish to go back even further, find an archeological dig and look for fossils. After indulging your prehistoric whims you are mere minutes from the comfort of your own home and every modern convenience.
Regardless of the season going to a college or pro sports game may be the impetus for your trip. Tailgating takes on a whole new meaning when done this way! From there you can go online to see what sights or campgrounds are available at that time and near the venue.
You can indulge just about any passion you have. Surprisingly, there are campgrounds that serve New York City if theater, art and food would satisfy. Catch baseball’s spring training, take advantage of outlet shopping - with room for all of your purchases and without the harried pace. Catch your favorite NASCAR event or sample any, all or some of the public golf courses across this great country.
The only limits you have are the ones you put upon yourself. Remember if you don’t want to drive across country you can always fly and rent the RV of your dreams once you get to your destination.
